Who We Are
The Black Classical Origins (BCO) was conceived 11 years ago with the vision of engaging the African-American community in the classical arts. Our vision has expanded to include promoting the participation of African-American students in the performing arts by awarding tuition assistance & scholarships based on need and merit. How You Can Help By attending the Black Classical Origins Gala or by making a donation your sponsorship dollars makes instruction in the classical arts possible for many African American children in mid-Michigan.

How Are We Doing
To date, more than $52,000 has been raised for financial assistance through Black Classical Origins. These funds are distributed to African-American students studying voice, instrumental music and dance at the Flint School of Performing Arts. A total of 46 merit scholarships and 34 tuition assistance awards have been made in amounts ranging from $75-$500.

Students receiving the tuition assistance awards have demonstrated financial need and range from beginners through advanced students and toddlers to adults. Merit scholarship recipients are selected through an annual audition process.
