Enjoy an exceptional Black Classical Origins experience with great food, stimulating fellowship, and entertainment featuring the Flint Jubilee Chorale.
Continue your evening at The Whiting Auditorium with the Flint Symphony Orchestra including flautist, Amy Porter.
Enjoy music from African American composers Scott Joplin and William Grand Still along with composers Aaron Copland and Michael Daugherty.


The mission of Black Classical Origins is to honor and expand the legacy that black classical composers and musicians have provided by composing, performing and shaping classical music.

Black Classical Origins will use the power, discipline and therapeutic value of classical and other music forms to entertain, inspire, uplift and transform individuals, families and Flint water crisis victims.


Make a significant impact in the lives of African American children by providing them the opportunity to study at the Flint School of Performing Arts.

A growing body of research indicates young students regularly exposed to classical music have longer attention spans, are more disciplined to have better cognitive reasoning skills, especially if they learn to read music.

To date, more than $80,000 has been raised for financial assistance through Black Classical Origins. These funds are distributed to African American students studying voice, instrumental music and dance at the Flint School of Performing Arts.

These scholarships are presented jointly by the Flint Symphony Orchestra and the Flint School of Performing Arts on the basis of need or merit. The annual Black Classical Origins experience seeks to bring families, communities and cultures together through the power of song, music and dance and to celebrate Black History Month.
